Spjelkavik Upper Secondary  School was built in 1978, but its history goes back to 1957 when Aalesund Handelsgymnasium was founded in the centre of Ålesund.  

Originally the school was mainly a trade/business school, and the main subjects were related to the needs of the region for well qualified work force/employees in  business and export industries.  

Due to development of the Norwegian school system the policy and character of Spjelkavik Upper Secondary School have changed.  

Today the school offers general and business studies in well-equipped and modern buildings.
